Scored a 8’6″ 5wt IM6/ when was it made?

Scored a 8'6

For $300 I bought a IM6 3 piece, with a downlock maple reel seat in mint condition. It has a serial number 579xx, any idea when it was made?

I’d say around 98, I have 2 BL5s with this number range bought from this year – I’m assuming that all models share the same range

Depending on manufacturing schedules, your rod was produced in either late 1997 or early 1998.

Keep in mind that although your rod is marked “IM6,” it was actually made from the newer WT graphite composite when Winston began rolling their own blanks in 1994. Winston did not change the “IM6″ moniker on the rods until 2001 when they were officially introduced/renamed as “WT.”

I own that same rod, but in the JWF model. It also has a down locking reel seat, but with a dark burled maple insert, as opposed to the lighter birds eye maple. IMO, the 8’ 6” IM6/WT is the best 5-weight in the Winston lineup.

Can anyone tell me if a rod with serial number #25XXX was made when Tom Morgan still owned Winston? Also is it a Loomis Blank?

Your rod was produced in late 1992 or early 1993 from an IM6 blank manufactured by G. Loomis. In 1991, Tom Morgan and Glenn Brackett sold Winston to David Ondaatje.

My 586-3WT has a serial #1159XX when was it made? My rod is also a down locker with a maple reel seat. The color of the wood is like a dark butter scotch. What a great rod it has been over the years

Your rod was manufactured in 2004 and has a burled maple reel seat insert (the same real seat hardware and insert as my JWF).

Be sure to hold onto it because it’s the best 5-weight rod in the Winston lineup, IMO.

I also would like to thank Richard for giving me the low down on my newly aquired 8’6″ WT 5wt, downlocking with zebra insert, 2 piece, and for a bonus it came with a warranty. This new rod sits next to its 3 piece brother that has a uplocking with maple insert (NOT BOX ELDER).
