Ok, I’m 2 or 3 days away from both a new 8′ 4wt WT (3pc) and an 8 wt MX. Looking for suggestions on reels and lines for both. I’m pretty set on a DT for the WT and some sort of longer back taper (belly?) line for the MX.

WT will be used for all ranges of Driftless Vikki trout with small flies 40 ft and under (more likely about 20 ft on average) and the MX will be used mostly for midwest steelhead (please spare me the great lakes migratory rainbows aren’t steelhead debate) on medium sized rivers (ie not requiring a spey rod). Looking forward to the great input I’ll get here.

WT 7’6ft 4wt 3pc downlocking seat over elder

LT 7’9ft 4wt 5pc uplocking seat over zebrawood

Would love to hear a comparison of the two or some arguments for either rod. Will be used for smallish to medium sized midwestern rivers and needs to handle dries, smaller nymphs, and maybe even the occasional smaller bugger.

Which one would you pick and why?

PS. Let me add that I have a LT 8’9ft 5wt and its my favorite trout rod

Well, I cast a 7 weight B2mx and a 7 weight B2x the other day, and really liked the action on the B2x, but liked the components of the B2mx better…

The salesman at the shop said that they could ask Winston if they could order a B2x blank made up with B2mx components, and maybe Winston would do it because they do some spacer changes for an upcharge…

The salesman called later to tell me that Winston said they couldn’t do that because the blank diameters are too different, that the B2x blank is too small for the metal reelseat of the MX…

This confuses me because the B2mx 4 weight seems to have the same reel seat as the 7 weight (though the 7 weight has a fighting butt)…and it’s not significantly different in diameter to the naked eye when compared to the 7 weight B2x…I could be wrong, I don’t have micrometers for eyes…oh well…can’t have everything you want all the time…

Went trout fishing for a weekend and ended up doing my share for the Winston stimulus program. I am a real fan of the Biix and really wanted to standardize on 4 pc. rods. During the mornings we got plenty of chance to test cast Winstons and some other brands against my TMF and 8’9″ 5 wt LT5. I should have listened to you guys. Found the T’s way more versatile than I expected and not noodle like at all.

I ended up falling for a 8 1/2′ BiiT for 5 wt and a 8′ BiiT for 4 wt. The 5 wt seems perfect with Sharkskin, another innovation I was all ready to dismiss, and the 4 wt seems just fine with my new Rio Grand. Based on my experience with the 5 wt some day I will try it with Sharkskiin.

  Thanks Winston.
