I own both rods and would highly recommend the MX for what you describe. The BIIIX is a great dry fly rod but the MX has just tons of power, try an airflo sixth sense on it or a 150 grain rio sink tip for streamers.

Thank you. How is it at short range nymphing?

I would say the MX is not great at short line nymphing. More like throwing 70 feet of line on a rope.

Really, I must be doing something wrong then because my 9′ 5wt MX managed 87 fish over two weekends shortline nymphing (between 10 and 30 foot). Seemed okay to me

The 5MX is a bad rod -it takes away the desire to use anything else. Love this rod and yes it will fish short.

I’m using the Rio Gold on my BIIMX and am very happy with it. A great line for this rod in my opinion.

I use Rio Grand on my 5wt BIIMX and Gold or Rio Nymph on my BIIX’s. The BIIMX will fish short, but the more line you throw, the better it loads.

I have found the airflow sixth sense to be perfect on the MX’s, they are heavy and have a long taper so for the five weight MX use the airflow 5/6. These lines were a tip from the Troutfitters in Bozeman MT. These lines make the MX an absolute rocket…
